Independent film shooting in Richmond stars Corbin Bernsen and Shirley Jones

film2The Virginia Film Office announced today that the family-friendly film On The Wing is currently filming in the Richmond area.

A collaboration between Big House Pictures and Contender Films, the project will star Corbin Bernsen (LA Law, Psych) and Oscar-winner Shirley Jones (Elmer Gantry, The Partridge Family, The Music Man). On The Wing was written by Jerry Casagrande of Alexandria, and written, co-produced and co-directed by Casagrande and Dan DeLuca, of Arlington. The screenplay was a finalist at the International Family Film Festival and a quarter-finalist at the Richmond International Film Festival. The cast of On The Wing includes actors from across Virginia as well as an almost entirely Richmond-based crew including many recent Virginia film school graduates.

The production will host a 30 minute press conference on set at St. Joseph’s Villa this Sunday, August 17th from 3:00-3:30 PM.

In speaking about the project, Film Office Director Andy Edmunds remarked: “We are so thrilled to have independent productions like this bringing experienced local crew members together with recent film school grads; On The Wing truly showcases what Virginia has to offer… great locations and even better people…We extend a warm welcome to Corbin and Shirley.”

Jerry Casagrande commented: “We couldn’t be happier with the support and cooperation we have received from the Virginia Film Office. Our experience here has been exceptional and we are looking forward to making other projects in the Commonwealth.”

On The Wing tells the story of a group of teens attending a student program in Washington, D.C. who decide to put up a fight against a devious U.S. Senator to thwart her plan to slaughter bald eagles to get at the oil beneath a wildlife refuge. Casagrande and DeLuca are both fathers of young children and each wanted to make a film that their kids could enjoy and that sent a message of empowerment to young people.

On The Wing received location, crew, casting and other assistance from the Virginia Film Office. The production has brought both out-of-state and foreign investment dollars into Virginia, with investors from Florida, California, New Jersey, France and Australia.

In 2012 the total economic impact of the film and television industry in Virginia totaled $328.4 million and provided 3,061 jobs and $50.5 million in tax revenue.
