The Richmond Flying Squirrels (11-19) earned a, 2-1, 10-inning walk-off win over the Binghamton Mets (19-14) on Wednesday afternoon at The Diamond. The Squirrels grabbed the series with the win as well, and finished their homestand with a mark of 4-2.
The ballgame had been deadlocked, 1-1, from the sixth inning on when the Squirrels came up against right-hander Matt Koch in the 10th. Rando Moreno sparked the inning when he led off and slapped a single through the left side of the infield. Mac Williamson followed and lined a sharp-single to right-center field to put runners at the corners. Mitch Delfino then provided the game-winner, sending a hard line-drive single to right field. It was Delfino’s third hit of the day. Koch (1-2) took the loss for Binghamton.
The B-Mets broke on top first in the fourth inning. Right-hander Kyle Crick started his own trouble by issuing a one-out walk to Aderlin Rodriguez. Albert Cordero followed with a single that moved Rodriguez around to third. He scored from there when Gilbert Gomez lifted a sacrifice-fly to centerfield.
On a limited pitch-count, Crick departed the ballgame after four innings. He was charged with the lone run on two hits. He walked three and struck out one. Crick threw 77 pitches, 47 of which were strikes.
Meanwhile, right-hander Gabriel Ynoa blanked the Squirrels on one hit through the first five innings. Richmond was able to scratch a run across in the sixth to tie the game, 1-1, however. With one out, Delfino poked a single into right field. Devin Harris followed and blooped a single into short-center field. Angel Villalona forced Harris at second with a groundout, but Delfino moved to third base. He scored from there on a wild-pitch from Ynoa.
Ynoa was charged with just the one run over seven sterling innings. He allowed three hits, walked two and struck out four. He did not factor in the decision.
Richmond received six scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. The all right-handed trio of Tyler Mizenko, Stephen Johnson and Jose Casilla each worked two scoreless innings. Mizenko handled the fifth and sixth. Johnson struck out five while working the seventh and eighth. Casilla (1-1) earned the win while holding off the B-Mets in the ninth and 10th. Casilla has now worked 10 consecutive scoreless innings. He escaped a bases-loaded predicament in the 10th.
The Squirrels depart for a seven-game road trip on Thursday as they travel to Bowie, MD, to open a four-game series with the Bowie Baysox (Baltimore Orioles) on Thursday night at Prince George’s Stadium. First pitch of the opener is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. as RHP Joe Biagini (1-2, 1.93) will make the start against Bowie RHP Branden Kline (3-2, 3.66).
