The Bowie Baysox (60-65) erupted for four runs in the fourth inning and blanked the Flying Squirrels (59-66) by a final of 5-0, completing a two-game sweep on Tuesday at The Diamond. Richmond gathered seven hits in the effort, but were shutout for the seventh time this season. The loss, coupled with an Altoona win, lowered Richmond’s elimination number to four with 14 games to play. The Flying Squirrels now embark on the final road trip of the season beginning Wednesday in Bowie, MD. Offensive highlights for Richmond included the third consecutive two-hit game for Ryan Howard (2-4). The second baseman extended his hitting streak to eight straight games with a base hit in the fourth. He later roped his 31st double of the year in the sixth.
The game was delayed one hour and eight minutes at the outset due to rain. Richmond RHP Chase Johnson tossed the first pitch at 7:43 p.m., and worked through the first three innings without allowing a run. Johnson dodged traffic early, including a bases loaded situation in the third.
Unfortunately, Johnson would not so fortunate in the fourth as Bowie loaded the bases yet again. This time, Corban Joseph lofted a deep, wind-aided fly ball into centerfield. Squirrels centerfielder Matt Lipka got twisted around trying to make the plat and the ball dropped for an RBI single about 375 feet from the plate. Johnson then unleashed a wild pitch, scoring Rylan Bannon for a 2-0 Bowie advantage. With runners at second and third, Aderlin Rodriguez smacked a ground ball that went under the glove of third baseman Jonah Arenado. The error scored Ryna McKenna and ended the outing for Johnson. Ryan Halstead finished the inning but not before an RBI groundout from Austin Hays scored an inherited runner for a 4-0 lead.
Johnson (3-3) worked 3.1 innings in the effort. The Giants 40-man roster member allowed six hits and walked three in the defeat. Johnson tossed 81 pitches and walked three. Halstead lasted 1.2 innings and allowed a run on a sacrifice fly to Erick Salcedo in the fifth inning for a 5-0 contest.
Richmond had their best scoring opportunity against Bowie starting pitcher Dean Kremer in the sixth inning. With CJ Hinojosa on first base, Ryan Howard roped a double into the gap in right centerfield. Hinojosa attempted to score from first base and was nailed at the plate, ending the inning and outing for Kremer. The righty tossed six scoreless innings and allowed just three hits in the win. Kremer (3-2) struck out six and did not walk a batter while using 87 pitches in the effort.
Richmond relievers Taylor Hill (2IP, 0H, 3K) Ian Gardeck (IP, 0H, BB) and Dusten Knight (IP, 0H, K) finished off the innings without allowing a run.
The Flying Squirrels embark on the final road trip of the season on Wednesday. The six-game, five-day, two-city tour begins at Prince George’s Stadium tomorrow. San Francisco Giants RHP Jeff Samardzija is scheduled to make a rehab appearance in the series opener against Bowie. The Baysox will counter with RHP Dillon Tate (6-4, 4.19).
