Mark Warner: ‘How can this go on?’

mark-warnerMark Warner is known as a different breed of Democrat. Among the areas where he has stood out has been his steadfast support of Second Amendment rights.

A comment posted by the senator to his Facebook page on Monday in the wake of the tragic events at an elementary school in Connecticut that left 27 people dead – including 20 first-grade students – shows that Warner is moving in a different direction on gun rights.

The statement:

“I’ve been a longtime supporter of Second Amendment rights. I believe that every American has Second Amendment rights. But you know, enough is enough. I’m the father of 3 daughters and this weekend they all said, ‘Dad, how can this go on?’ And I think most of us realize that there are ways to get to rational gun control, that there are ways to grapple with the obvious challenges of mental illness. There won’t be one perfect law that’s going to stop a crazy person from doing evil things. But when we have close to 30,000 killings a year from all types of gun violence, even if we save a few lives we make progress… And I can give my daughters a better answer than I gave them Friday night.”
