Longwood upsets No. 1 seed Charleston Southern, advances to Big South Semifinals

longwood logoShaquille Johnson recorded his second straight double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds to lead ninth-seeded Longwood to a 68-60 upset win over top-seeded Charleston Southern in the quarterfinals of the VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Championship Friday at The HTC Center.

Johnson, who poured in 25 points and 11 rebounds in a first-round tournament win over Presbyterian Wednesday, carried the Lancers once again in upsetting the Big South regular season champions. The 6-5 junior forward hit 9-of-20 field goals and added a career-high five blocks as Longwood (11-22) became the first nine seed to upset a one seed in the Big South Tournament.

Longwood’s big three of Johnson, Leron Fisher and Quincy Taylor all scored in double figures for the second straight tournament game, accounting for 49 of Longwood’s 68 points. Taylor came alive in the second half, scoring 13 of his 15 points, while Fisher added 12.

The win advances the Lancers to the Big South semifinals for the first time where they will face the winner of No. 4 seed Radford and No. 5 seed Winthrop Saturday at noon. That game will broadcast on ESPN3, WVHL 92.9 FM in Farmville and WHAP 1340 AM in Hopewell and the Richmond area.
