July – Book-A-Trip. Everyone is invited to read A Stillness at Appomattox by Bruce Catton. Then, join the bus trip to the Appomattox Court House National Historic Park & Museum of the Confederacy in August. Books will be available to purchase at the library.

July – Paws to Read Children’s Summer Reading Program. Children receive one library dollar for every picture book read, or every ten pages of a chapter book read.  Use the bucks to buy books from our mobile store through August 2nd.  Weekly prizes are available for all participants.

July – Literary Elements Adult Summer Reading Program. Summer reading isn’t just for kids! Adults could win prizes this summer by checking out books, writing a review (of a book or audiobook), or attending a program. One prize will be drawn each week, and all entries will be eligible for the grand prize drawing.

Saturday, July 5, 12:00 pm – Wildlife Center of Virginia. Are you ready for up-close experiences with live, non-releasable wild animals such as hawks, owls, snakes, turtles, and opossums?  Learn more about the creatures around you with this family-friendly program.

Tuesday, July 8, 12:00 pm – Music at the Library featuring blues by Dr. Levine and the Dreaded Blues Lady. Enjoy free pizza and soda.

Thursday, July 10, 5:00-8:00 pm – Comic Con. Learn how to draw comics, enjoy movie screenings, watch a sushi rolling demonstration and more. Pre-register for this event to receive a comic-con swag bag which includes refreshment vouchers and other surprises.  This is a three-day event hosted by all valley libraries.

Friday, July 11, 6:30 pm – Friday Night at the Movies. Showing new releases on the big screen. Free popcorn and drinks. Check at the library for the featured film.

Tuesday, July 156:00 pm – B.Y.O. Create your own infinity scarf!  Bring a larger or x-large t-shirt with few or no decals on the front.  We will craft them into a gorgeous scarf you can wear in the fall!  Ages 13+, registration required.

Wednesday, July 16, 7:00 pm – Wednesday Night Book Club. Fascinating and far ranging discussion with other book lovers. The book is provided, participants vote on selections, and a staff member leads the discussion. This month’s selection is A Stillness at Appomattox by Bruce Catton.

Tuesday, July 22, 6:00 pm – You Made It! T-shirt Ruffle Scarf. Transform your old t-shirt into a beautiful scarf. Bring a t-shirt sized XL or larger to cut up and beads or hair clips to embellish, if desired.

Friday, July 25, 6:30 p.m. – Friday Night at the Movies. Showing new releases on the big screen. Free popcorn and drinks. Check at the library for the featured film.

Tuesday, July 29, 6:00 pm – You Made It! Make a bouquet of fabric flowers by bringing strips of cotton cloth at least 2”x16” (found cheaply at Wal-Mart or reuse old sheets or shirts). Dowel rods and glue will be supplied. Bring a low-heat glue gun with glue sticks, if desired.

Thursday, July 31, 12:00 pm – Rico’s World. Back by popular demand, this high energy show combines music, moves, literacy, and a lot of fun.  Be prepared to laugh, sing, and maybe even join Rico on stage.  This program is fun for the whole family.

 

Weekly – No story times July 31st.

Monday

1:00 pm – Monday Matinees — Blanket Blockbusters

Monday afternoons in July watch family friendly matinee movies in the lower level of the library.  Bring your own blanket to camp out on the floor and enjoy the show!

10:30 am – Swing and Sway This music and movement class is just the thing you need to get started in the morning. No stories, just song and dance.  Ages 0-6.

4:00 pm – WPL Knitters. Bring your materials and socialize with other knitters.

 

Tuesday

9:30-11:30 am – Chat-N-Play provides interactive play for your little one and conversation for you. Open to children ages 0-3 and their caregivers.

10:00 am – Walking Book Club. Meet at the library briefly to discuss current books you’re reading, then hit the Greenway for a walk. Sign-up at the library.

 

Wednesday

9:30 am – Mother Goose Time is an interactive program featuring songs, finger-plays, books, movements, and nursery rhymes for children from birth through age two and their caregivers.

10:30 am – Story Time features books, stories, songs, puppets, flannel board activities, and crafts for children ages two through five accompanied by an adult.

 

Thursday

9:30 am – Mamá Ganso, mother Goose in Spanish, features stories, songs, finger-plays, and movements for children from birth through age two and their caregivers.

10:00 am – Computer classes are offered Thursday of every week. Classes rotate between Computer Basics, Basic Internet Skills, Introduction to Microsoft Word and Introduction to Microsoft Excel.  Call (540) 942-6746 to register.
