Top seed Indiana ousts JMU from NCAA Tournament, 83-62

jmu logoFreshmen scored 46 of the 62 points for the 16th-seeded James Madison men’s basketball team, but top-seeded Indiana grabbed a 23-point first half lead and shot 53 percent for the game to deal Madison an 83-62 loss in the NCAA Tournament Second Round at the University of Dayton Arena in Dayton, Ohio on Friday afternoon.

The loss stopped JMU’s five-game winning streak, including four straight in postseason play. The Dukes concluded the 2012-13 season with a 21-15 record, tied for their second-most wins in program history. The Hoosiers (28-6) move on to Sunday’s Third Round where they’ll take on ninth-seeded Temple.

Freshmen guards Andre Nation (Plant City, Fla./Faith Baptist Christian School) and Charles Cooke (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) each poured in career-highs to pace the Dukes’ attack. Nation hit on 10 of his 16 shot attempts, finishing with 24 points, four rebounds and a block. Cooke scored 18 points, hitting on four of five three-point attempts. Redshirt senior guard Devon Moore (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) handed out four assists to become the first player in school history to surpass 500 assists, finishing with 502.

Yogi Ferrell led five IU players in double figures with 16, adding a game-high eight rebounds and six assists. Cody Zeller and Victor Oladipo contributed 11 points each while Will Sheehey scored 15 points, grabbed three rebounds and handed out two assists. Jordan Hulls was the fifth player in double figures with 10.

Indiana won the battle on the boards, pulling down 38 to JMU’s 28, including 11 offensive rebounds. IU shot 52.7 percent for the game while JMU shot 41.9 percent, including 40 percent from three-point range.

After being outscored by 21 in the first half, the Dukes hung with the Hoosiers in the second half as each team scored 40 points in the period. Freshmen scored 34 of the 40 second half points for Madison including all 18 of Cooke’s points. Nation poured in 14 points of his points in the second 20 minutes while rookie guard Ron Curry(Pennsauken, N.J./Paul IV) added a second-half bucket.

The Hoosiers never let Madison get any closer than 19 points after the intermission, stifling any Madison run with an answer on the offensive end. Sheehey scored nine of points in the second half to help keep the Dukes at bay.

Indiana came out firing from the opening tip, scoring a layup on a fourth opportunity during its first possession. Ultimately the Hoosiers scored the first nine points of the game before forcing JMU head coach Matt Brady to call his first timeout. Ferrell paced the IU attack early scoring 14 of the team’s first 16 points, including making all six of his shots as Indiana led 18-7 at the second media timeout.

The Hoosiers stayed hot from the floor, making five of their first nine three-point attempts and hitting on 63 percent of their shots to hold onto a 29-12 lead by the under-eight minute timeout. JMU shot just 29.4 percent from the field in the game’s opening 12 minutes but received seven points on 3-of-4 shooting from redshirt senior guard A.J. Davis (Columbus, Ohio/Harmony Community School).

IU carried a 43-22 lead into halftime, finishing the first 20 minutes shooting 57.1 percent and grabbing seven offensive rebounds. Ferrell led all players with 14 points, adding seven rebounds and three assists. Zeller had seven points and three rebounds while Sheehey made three of his five field goal attempts for six points.

Nation led the Dukes with 10 points, adding two rebounds and a block. Davis contributed seven points on 3-for-6 shooting. Redshirt senior forward Rayshawn Goins (Cleveland, Ohio/Glenville) had a team-best five rebounds while Moore led JMU with a pair of assists.
