Skills gap is focus of talk by SHRM exec at Bridgewater College

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 11 million Americans are unemployed. And yet, 4 million jobs languish with no one to fill them.

bridgewaterThe “skills gap” – the divide between the skills job seekers have and the skills employers seek – will be the focus of a talk at Bridgewater College Feb. 11 by the president and chief executive officer of the International Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).

Henry G. Jackson will address the national ramifications of the skills gap at noon in Cole Hall. The event, which is hosted by the college’s SHRM club, is free and open to the public.

A subsequent panel discussion with business leaders, human resources professionals and Bridgewater College President David W. Bushman will explore the changes that are needed in education, federal and state laws and business practices to seriously address the skills gap.

Jackson will also stress that human resources professionals are uniquely qualified to lead the national effort to tackle what he called a “growing dilemma.”

Jackson joined SHRM from Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he was the university’s executive vice president and chief financial officer and treasurer. For several years, he also was a consultant for the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers.

SHRM is the world’s largest association devoted to the human resource profession with offices in the U.S., China, india and the Middle East.
