The James Madison women’s basketball team tied a program record for most points scored in a game Wednesday night with a 107-58 victory over College of Charleston on Senior Night at the JMU Convocation Center.
The Dukes, who ended the regular season with a 26-3 overall record and 17-1 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play, matched a 28-year old record when they put up 107 against UNCW on Feb. 28, 1987, in the CAA Semifinals. The 107 points is also the most points scored in a CAA women’s basketball game since JMU last eclipsed the 100-point mark with 104 points against UMBC on Dec. 18, 2008. Charleston finished the regular season 5-24 and 3-15 in conference play.
Junior guard Precious Hall led five Dukes in double figures with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting. She also knocked down four 3-pointers and grabbed six rebounds while playing in her 100th consecutive game for the Dukes, which is the 14th longest streak in program history. Redshirt-senior center Lauren Okafor earned her 12th double-double of the season with 16 points and 16 rebounds while junior guard Angela Mickens missed a triple-double by one assist after scoring 10 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. With 221 assists this season, Mickens ranks second all-time for most in a single season and is two off the program record of 223.
Junior guard Ashley Perez and senior forward Toia Giggetts rounded out the double-figure scorers for JMU, as Perez scored 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 from range while Giggetts closed her career at the Convo with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Playing in her 133rd game as a Duke, Giggetts ranks third on the all-time games played list. For the second home game in a row, each JMU player that saw action in the contest scored.
JMU opened the game on 11-2 run and held the Cougars scoreless until 16:13 mark of the first half. The Dukes then used a 20-2 run to take a 31-point lead at 54-23 with 2:23 to go in the half. Ultimately, JMU scored 58 points in the frame, which marked the most in a single half this season. It also tied the program record for most points scored in a single half all-time, tying the record that was set on Nov. 25, 1985, against Liberty.
Charleston was led by Breanna Bolden, who scored a team-high 18 points, while Erin Hall was the only other Cougar to score in double figures with 10 points.
Overall, JMU shot 49.3 percent from the floor on 37-of-75. Going 12-of-25 from range, Madison tied the school record with 12 made 3-pointers, which was last accomplished Jan. 22, 2015, against William & Mary, a 92-50 victory over the Tribe. Charleston struggled from the field, shooting just 33.3 percent on 17-of-51 from the floor while going just 2-of-11 (18.2 percent) from 3-point land.
With the regular-season CAA championship in tow, JMU goes into the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed and will take on the winner of No. 8 Towson and No. 9 College of Charleston in the quarterfinals at 12 p.m. on Friday, March 13, at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md. Towson and Charleston will face off on Thursdayafternoon to decide who gets the right to play the Dukes.
