virginia#13 Virginia needed this one. Bad. And it got the win over #8 Miami Tuesday night, and it doesn’t matter that it looked bad.

The Cavs survived a late rally to beat the Hurricanes in a slugfest, 66-58.

UVA (13-3, 2-2 ACC) had come in on a two-game losing streak, and hadn’t lost three in a row in five years.

Virginia led 27-23 at the half, but Miami (13-2, 2-1 ACC) opened the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 30-27 lead with 16:46 to go.

A three by London Perrantes with 11:20 left would give Virginia a 44-43 lead, and it would turn out that the Cavaliers would never trail thereafter.

UVA led by seven at the under-four media timeout, but Miami would claw back to within 59-56 and had an open three for Ivan Cruz Uceda that rimmed out with 1:32 left.

Perrantes would hit a tough floater in the lane with 1:04 to go to extend the lead to five. Miami point guard Angel Rodriguez missed the front end of a one-and-one with 49 seconds left, and Virginia was able to close out the game at the free-throw line, hitting 5-of-6 in the final 49 seconds.

Malcolm Brodgon led UVA with 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field. Anthony Gill had 15 points and eight rebounds.

Perrantes had 13, all in the second half. Mike Tobey had 12 points, 10 in the first half, and seven rebounds.

UVA shot 51.1 percent (24-of-47) from the field and won the boards, 35-27.

Miami got 17 from Rodriguez, 11 in the second half, and 13 from Sheldon McClellan, who was just 4-of-12 from the field.

The ‘Canes shot 42.0 percent from the floor (21-of-50) and were 6-of-22 (27.3 percent) from three.

Virginia was just 2-of-7 from three-point range, but made two of its three long-range attempts in the second half.
