Planned Parenthood applauds Governor McAuliffe’s equal opportunity agenda

state-capitol2Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia applauds Governor McAuliffe on the release of his 2015 Equal Opportunity agenda. The agenda, which includes measures to promote women’s access to health care, as well as pay equity, highlights several priorities of the newly-formed Virginia Women’s Equality Coalition.

“We are delighted with Governor McAuliffe’s Equal Opportunity agenda for the 2015 legislative session. The Governor’s support for the repeal of the mandatory ultrasound requirement underscores the fact that deeply personal health care decisions should be made between a woman and her doctor, without interference from politicians. Women’s access to a full range of reproductive health care services is directly tied to their economic security and the well-being of their families,” said Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia Executive Director Cianti Stewart-Reid.

Also of note in the Governor’s announcement is his support for pay equity. Ensuring women are fairly compensated for their work should be commonsense, yet many women make less than their male counterparts for the same work. By ensuring women are paid fairly for their work, women and their families will be fully able to contribute to the good of Virginia. These priorities reflect the realities of women’s lives and are good public policy.

“We are thankful for a leader like Governor McAuliffe, who recognizes the challenges many women across Virginia face in accessing affordable health care. We look forward to supporting and advocating for a Virginia in which all citizens are equal,” said Stewart-Reid.

Last week, the Women’s Equality Coalition announced their 2015 legislative agenda which focuses on women’s health and safety, economic opportunity, and democratic participation. In addition to repealing the burdensome ultrasound mandate and strengthening Virginia’s equal pay statute, the Coalition supports expanding women’s access to affordable health care and raising wages for families so women have the resources to support their families.
