vmiHoping to end the 2016 home season with a win on Senior Day, the VMI men’s soccer team fell by a close 1-0 score to Wofford Tuesday evening at Patchin Field.

The Keydets (0-15, 0-9) came close to scoring on multiple occasions, including two shots that banked off the goalpost and another that flew just a foot over the crossbar as VMI tried desperately to knot the game at one apiece before the end of regulation.

Wofford (10-6, 5-4) captain Matthew Aurednik scored the game-winning goal in the eighth minute (7:05) as he took a deep through ball from teammate Connor Donohue and snuck it over VMI goalie Robert Allen’s hands by way of a header as Allen surged out of the box to try to tap it away from him.

The Terriers outshot the Keydets by a 22-10 margin, including 9-1 on goal, in the shutout victory. VMI was led by sophomore Grant Austin, who logged four shot attempts while junior Tyler Colgan registered two. Senior Alex Hartman had a shot on goal that required a save from Terrier goalie Joe Wichmann. The Keydets also had three corner kick attempts in the close loss.

The game marked the final home event for seniors Dan Geyer, Alex Hartman, Jackson Rowady and Chris Spates.

VMI returns to action Saturday to close the 2016 regular season at UNCG at 7 p.m. at Spartan Stadium. The league tournament begins a week later on Saturday, Nov. 5.
