The Waynesboro Senior Center, sponsored by Valley Program for Aging Services, invites people 60 years of age and older to participate in a variety of programs to be offered in the coming week. The center, at 325 Pine Ave., in the Jackson-Wilson building, is open 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Transportation is provided as needed by a VPAS van driver, who also helps with shopping trips and appointments to local doctors. Contributions toward expenses are accepted. Additional information can be found at www.waynesboroseniorcenter.org.

JMU Nursing Interns Helping at the Center

The Center has a long-standing relationship with the Nursing Program at James Madison University in Harrisonburg. All nursing students are required to take a one credit class early in their coursework that gives them some practical experiences working with older people. As part of this class, the students provide assistance in Senior Centers for about four hours each week for four weeks. The Waynesboro Senior Center is fortunate to have had the help of these students each semester for several years.

While the students are working in the Center, they talk to the seniors, help with programs, conduct blood pressure checks, deliver meals on wheels, and prepare a presentation on a health topic. All of this activity allows the students to become comfortable interacting with the older generation. The students bring to the Center a sense of energy that comes with youth and lots of extra help for our projects. The Center will welcome two groups of interns this semester. The first group started their four week service today, Feb. 3, and the second group will start March 3. This time is always rewarding to both the students and the members of the Center. We are happy to play a small part in the education of our future medical professionals.
