A Waynesboro man wanted by police on three outstanding Waynesboro felony warrants was arrested last night after threatening a 23-year-old Grottoes man with a gun at the Shell Station at East Broad Street and Charlotte Avenue, and forcing him to drive to another location.
The victim called 911 while driving to the Wal-Mart as the suspect followed him after brandishing a handgun and first demanding that he exit the car. The victim was able to convince the assailant to allow him to go to Wal-Mart where it would be better light and more people.
The suspect continued to follow the victim as they neared the Wal-Mart area until the appoach of responding officers caused him to flee via westbound I-64.
A short time later the suspect’s abandoned vehicle was found at mile marker 93 on I-64 by Virginia State Police and assistence was requested from the Augusta County Sheriff’s Department K-9 teams in an attempt to track the individual.
The track was ultimately unsuccessful but information led officers to the Emergency Department at Augusta Health in Fishersville. Hospital Security was notified of the possible presence of the armed fugitive and were provided a discription of him. The Emergency Department was locked down and arriving Waynesboro officers found the suspect sitting near the security desk. He was given commands, ultimately complied, and was taken into custody. Upon a search of his person incident to arrest a 380 semi-automatic pistol was recovered as well as suspected methamphetamine.
Maximiliano Martinez-Cruz, 22, is being held without bond in middle River Regional Jail on the three outstnading Waynesboro Charges dating from November 2nd, 2014, as well as additional charges stemming from last night’s incident.

- Distribute Methamphetamine
- Distribute Marijuana
- Possession of a Firearm while possessing a Schedule 1 or 2 Drug
Charges related to last night’s incident include:
- Brandishing a Firearm
- Abduction
- Posession of Methamphetamine
- Posession of a Firearm While in Possession of a Schedule 1 or 2 Drug
Additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.
