Report: Ed Gillespie gearing up for Senate run vs. Mark Warner

Chris Graham

The New York Times is reporting that former Republican National Committee chairman Ed Gillespie is gearing up for a run for the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrat Mark Warner.

The seat is up for re-election this year. Warner, a former governor, won the seat in 2008 with 65 percent of the vote in a race with former Republican governor jim gilmore.

Gillespie made news over the weekend in telling a group of Norfolk Republicans that he viewed the 2014 Senate race with Warner as “winnable.”

He said at that event that he would make a final call by the Feb. 1 filing deadline to be considered for the Republican nomination.

Democrats are already pouncing at the chance to knock Gillespie down a peg. Guy Cecil, executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, issued the following statement on a possible Gillespie candidacy:

“Virginians don’t want to elect a DC shadow lobbyist like Ed Gillespie who epitomizes the reckless and irresponsible Republican economic agenda. Gillespie won’t work to strengthen Virginia’s economy, cut the nation’s debt or work to find common ground in Washington the way Mark Warner has done, and Virginians know that.

Democrats have had great electoral success in Virginia in the last several years and are confident that they will reelect Senator Warner so he can continue representing Virginia families and doing what’s right for Virginia’s economy.”
