The Republican-controlled House Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee on Friday approved Del. Bob Marshall’s extreme bill that will prevent the Virginia government from complying with federal gun control legislation enacted after Dec. 31, 2012. All Republicans in the committee voted in favor of the legislation.
Several members of the House Democratic Caucus immediately responded to the Committee’s vote.
“Del. Marshall’s bill is beyond extreme. It is critical that the Commonwealth work in partnership with the federal government to enforce legislation that improves public safety and keeps dangerous weapons out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill. I support an individual’s 2nd Amendment right to bear arms for protection, collection, sports and any other reasonable use. I am disappointed that my Republican colleagues choose to support an extreme ideology before basic public safety,” said Del. Roslyn Tyler (D- Greensville, Sussex).
Del. Alfonso Lopez (D-Arlington) responded, “Delegate Marshall’s legislation is a step in the wrong direction for Virginia. Instead of promoting some far Right agenda, we need to move forward on practical measures that will protect our children and the public from gun violence. I hope that House Republicans will reconsider this bill and work in the best interest of the public safety for all Virginians.”
“We have serious work to do in order to improve public safety in Virginia. Delegate Marshall’s bill would put the lives of Virginia citizens at risk. It is time that we come together to keep our children safe, improve the safety of our schools, enhance the delivery of mental health care services, and prevent criminals from obtaining dangerous weapons. This is no time to advance an extreme ideology, rather time to come together in support of common sense legislation that promotes public safety in the Commonwealth,” said Del. Eileen Filler-Corn (D-Fairfax).
