Community groups mobilize for gang prevention project

staunton2editsGlenn Martin, Gang Prevention Program Coordinator with the Central Shenandoah Valley Office on Youth announces that on Tuesday April 23, 2013, from 3-5:00PM, at the Farrier Court Apartment Complex in Staunton, adults and youth will work side-by-side to complete a community building beautification project which includes an indoor wall mural, and the planting of flowerbeds and trees on facility grounds.

Both projects will be fully underway by 4:00pm on the 23rd and community volunteers are welcome to participate.

Under the direction of Bridgewater College student, Ms. Laney Riley, the indoor mural will depict a beautiful tree with “LOVE” weaved into the tree roots and different acts of kindness written into the tree leaves.  Members of Bridgewater College’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Club (FCCLA) and volunteers from the Blue Ridge Church of Christ will assist youth in the outdoor planting project.

This project is the result of many months of planning between the Office on Youth (Mr. Glenn Martin), the Staunton Redevelopment and Housing Authority (Ms. Wanda Stevens), Bridgewater College (Dr. Donna Hoskins), and the Blue Ridge Church of Christ (Mr. and Mrs. Stacey Burkholder and family).  Numerous community supporters and volunteers have also assisted, including:  members of the SAW Coalition, Valley Community Services Board, Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church, Willow View Apartments (Ms. Elizabeth Baber), and students from James Madison University and Mary Baldwin College.
