richmond flying squirrelsThe Richmond Flying Squirrels dropped game two of the season on Friday night by a final score of 8-3, despite out-hitting Hartford 13-9 in the contest.

Hartford snapped a 1-1 game with three runs in the sixth inning to take the lead and not look back. Squirrels shortstop Christian Arroyo collected four hits and reached base five times in the contest. The Squirrels played the contest as the road game due to the Hartford Park not being ready for play. Games two and three of the series are Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader starting at 2:05 PM at The Diamond.

Yard Goats starter Zach Jemiola managed to evade trouble throughout the night. Squirrels shortstop Arroyo had the first of four hits in the first inning. Arroyo moved to second on a walk and attempted to score on a base hit to right field from Ricky Oropesa but was thrown out at the plate.

The Squirrels were able to break through with a run produced in the top of the third inning. Arroyo once again got things started with a base hit to centerfield. With one out, Oropesa singled to move Arroyo to third base. Ryder Jones followed with an RBI single to left field to give the Squirrels a 1-0 lead.

Hartford tied things up in the fourth inning on a solo home run from David Dahl. The homer was the only blemish on an otherwise impressive line for Squirrels starting pitcher Adalberto Mejia. The 22 year-old Meja worked five innings and allowed just two hits with seven strikeouts in the no decision. Christian Jones then entered in his Double-A debut to relieved Mejia to start the sixth. Jones allowed three runs on four hits as the Yard Goats took their first lead of the game.

The Hartford bullpen combination of Carlos Hernandez, Austin House, Matt Pierpont and Shane Broyles was effective to close out the game. Richmond pushed across a pair of runs off Pierpont in the eighth on RBI singles by Carlos Moncrief and Myles Schroder

The Squirrels and Yard Goats will conclude Home Run weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon starting at2:05 PM. RHP Chase Johnson will square off against RHP Antonio Senzatela in game one. Squirrels RHP Joan Gregorio is scheduled to toss the second contest against Yard Goats RHP German Marquez.
