Letter: Waynesboro YMCA seeks help with two community projects

On occasion I’ll go to our Waynesboro YMCA members, friends, and donors and ask for help.  I have two special requests this holiday season and wanted to see if folks might be interested in getting involved.

We are hosting Breakfast with Santa again this year and needed help with presents for the kids.  We are blessed to have Rob Bond, with Blue Mountain Brewery,  who will be donating the breakfast for our families on Dec. 12.  We also got a generous Y couple, Bob & Patty Rouse, that have agreed to match any purchase of a present for our kids on this family event!  We are looking to serve 100 kids and the Rouses will buy a present for every present our members/friends buy.  It only costs $15 to buy a present for a child (our staff will purchase them).  Would you consider donating a present or two for a Y child for $15?

Secondarily – we are thrilled to announce Friday Night Basketball has started again.   Every Friday through May we keep our doors open until Midnight for area teens.  An anonymous donor from the Community Foundation is funding our Police and staffing support (and some basketballs) and we generally look to the community weekly to help us feed the teenagers that come to the Y.  We average about 110 kids a night and pizza generally costs $75.  If you’d like to sponsor a Friday Night and feed a group of hungry teenagers – let me know!

You can call my cell at 241-3944 or email me at [email protected] to let me know if you can donate a gift or buy pizza (or both).

– Jeff Fife is the executive director of the Waynesboro YMCA
