Update: Friday, July 6, 10:13 a.m. The right lane of southbound Interstate 81 has reopened in Rockbridge County. Crews have finished a hazardous-material removal operation near mile marker 204, about a mile south of exit 205 (Raphine). The materials were contained within a tractor trailer at that location.
Both I-81 southbound lanes are open, but traffic is currently backed up about four miles and will take some time to diminish.
Original post: Friday, July 6, 8:21 a.m. The right lane of southbound Interstate 81 is closed in Rockbridge County due to a hazardous-material removal operation near mile marker 204. The materials are contained to a tractor trailer but cleanup is expected to continue through late Friday morning.
The left lane of southbound I-81 remains open but traffic is currently backed up about two miles. This incident is between I-81 exit 205 (Raphine) and exit 200 (Fairfield). Motorists can expect related congestion on Route 11 in these areas.
