The Virginia Quilt Museum announced this week that Meegan Carr has been selected as its new executive director.
Carr comes to Virginia’s official state quilt museum after a total of seven years with the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kent., where she held several positions, most recently as business manager. Prior to her position in the business office with the National Quilt Museum, she directed educational programs, coordinated special events, was involved with collections management and exhibits, and museum operations. While in Western Kentucky she worked with local community festivals, as well as youth and sports programs.
“Working in Virginia will allow me to return to my educational training in history with an emphasis on the Civil War,” said Carr. Her collegiate focus was in the military strategies employed by Civil War officers. Carr holds an M.B.A. in Finance from Keller Graduate School of Management of DeVry University, and a M.A. in Public History and a B.A. in History/Secondary Education from Murray State University. In addition to her duties at the Virginia Quilt Museum, she will continue to teach online college courses in Business and History and plans to be active in local quilt and history groups.
According to the president of the Virginia Quilt Museum Board of Directors, Paula Golden, “We’re very pleased to have Meg join us. Her various skills will enable the museum to build its reputation, and enhance its visibility among diverse audiences. She will be a great ambassador for us around the state, as well as with the museum and arts communities.”
Originally from Apalachin, N.Y., Carr resides in Weyers Cave with her husband. They both enjoy outdoor athletic activities. “We look forward to calling the mountains of Virginia our home,” Carr said.
Carr will be officially introduced at the museum’s Annual Meeting on Feb. 9 in Harrisonburg.
The museum opens its 2013 season on Feb. 1 with three diverse quilt and textile exhibits, all based on this year’s exhibit theme of DESIGNS + DIMENSIONS. Doodles, Diamonds & Other Dramatic Designs is composed of dramatic award-winning quilts made by former Congressional wife Dodie Erlenborn featuring patriotic and personal themes. Material Witnesses, contemporary fiber art by the men and women of the Manhattan Quilters Guild, are textural interpretations of the makers’ lives in and around New York City. Through the Eye of Needlepoint exhibits quilt designs in exceptionally intricate needlework, resembling miniature tapestries, created by the Shenandoah Valley Chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild.
