Uncle Henry’s Favorites at WTA’s Gateway

Uncle Henry’s Favorites Old-Time String Band will bring their unique version of the music that was the hallmark of the mountain culture.  The performance will be a homecoming for the band’s fiddler/guitarist Pete Vigour who was raised in Waynesboro. Joining him will be Ellen Vigour on mandolin, Jim Childress on fiddle and guitar and Mark Beall on bass.  The group has, they say, “fiddled and sung traditional old-time music together since 1985.”   The concert is at 8:00 pm at WTA’s Gateway in downtown Waynesboro.

Uncle Henry’s Favorites hails from Albemarle County, Virginia, home of rolling hills, Jefferson cups, farms, Wahoos and Cavaliers, mountain streams, and a surprisingly active and dedicated community of old-time country fiddlers, banjoists, mandolinists, Carter-family-style singing groups, guitar pickers, Cajun accordionists, square dancers, cloggers, bass fiddlers, and countless other homegrown-music enthusiasts.  The band has performed their own special version of old-time music at social occasions throughout their local area. For the 18th straight year, the band presided over the Albemarle County Fiddlers’ Contest, this year drawing 30 fiddlers to compete and jam together at the Labor Day event. Jim and Pete take turns with the fiddle and guitar, Ellen plays the mandolin and calls the dances, while Mark provides the bass fiddle accompaniment. Pete also has been playing the banjo since the age of ten, and often frails the old square dance tunes when the band performs. The “Uncle Henry’s Favorites” CD has won rave reviews, and the band reached a national audience with an appearance on public radio’s “A Prairie Home Companion.”

WTA’s Gateway is located at 329 West Main in downtown Waynesboro.  Opened in August of 2011, the space has gained a reputation as an ideal intimate arena for music.  The theatre has food and beverages available for its audience.   WTA’s Gateway is the Wayne Theatre Alliance first step towards opening the renovated Wayne Theatre as a performing arts/conference center.
