There’s no two ways around it: Americans are extremely hard workers. Indeed, Americans toil so frequently that people from other countries are often stunned by American work habits. And while consummate professionalism is commendable, it’s also important to relax and unwind from time to time. Skipping vacations, working on weekends and holidays, and staying in touch with colleagues after office hours can lead to serious mental and physical fatigue. If you’re not careful, you could even adversely affect your health by working too often. Thankfully, the following five activities will help you forget about the 9-to-5 grind and enjoy yourself for a few hours. Check them out here:

Exercise

On the surface, exercising might not sound like the best way to relax. But the reality is that physical exertion is great for your well-being and your mood. Exercising releases endorphins into the bloodstream, which makes you feel great. In fact, it’s likely that you’ll feel energized after a jog around the park or a quick session on a bicycle.

Read

It’s important to clarify that there’s a big difference between reading an article on your smartphone and sitting down to read an actual book. We’d definitely recommend the latter for stressed-out pros. Reading affords you an opportunity to unplug (literally) and get engrossed in a story. Whether you enjoy straightforward potboilers, or complicated classics, picking up a book is a great way to relieve tension.

Hit the Road

Of course, vacations can be pretty hectic –– depending on your tastes and destinations. Regardless of whether you want to visit Laos or upstate New York, though, traveling is a worthwhile experience. There are few activities more rewarding than seeing, hearing, or tasting something amazing for the first time.

Head to the Spa

Is there any activity more relaxing than a laid-back day at the spa or beauty salon? We don’t think so. If it’s been a couple of months since you last took a personal day to focus on your health and beauty, then make sure to schedule one ASAP. (Contact the professionals at Virago Skin & Body Studio for more information on this subject.)

Treat Yourself

At the end of the day, relaxation is all about treating yourself. So whatever it is you most want to do, allow yourself to do it! Too often, people defer dreams and put off going to fun and relaxing events because they feel pressured to fulfill some other sort of obligation. Yet, life is short, and it’s important to remember that you should try and enjoy it to the fullest. So don’t overthink it –– just do it!
