The long-running River City Radio Hour will take its place at the Wayne Theatre/Ross Performing Arts Center. The April 15th Radio Hour will feature a reunion of Wanda and the White Boys and an appearance by the nationally known comedian and motivational speaker Brett Leake. Joining them will be Kevin Chisnell, Lorie Strother, and Stewart Hall. Capping it all will be Richard Adams and theBoogie Kings.
“I am truly grateful that the Radio Hour will be able to make its debut on the Wayne stage in April. After nine-years of out-and-about, the Radio Hour has a home,” said Clair Myers, producer and creator. We are so lucky to have talked Wanda and the White Boys into a reunion performance as part of the April Radio Hour and that Brett Leake has taken time from his touring to grace the evening.”
Wanda and the White Boys gave a farewell concert at Staunton’s Ntelos Theatre in 2013, sold their equipment to Waynesboro’s Gateway Theatre and called an end to their career. With some persuasion from Richard Adams, Wanda Eaves Taylor was coaxed into performing. Once she agreed, he talked the other members of the band to come back for a reunion in the newly opened Wayne Auditorium. The popular group played before sell-out audiences since its beginning. Their time away from the concert stage makes this performance even more attractive.
Brett Leake, the sit-down, stand-up comedian has held audiences across the United States and on national television transfixed with his unique take on life and his sense of the ridiculous. Widely popular as a motivational speaker, Leake will share his latest perspective on the world.
Lorie Strother and Kevin Chisnell are Radio Hour favorites. Solo or in tandem, they are among the finest of local talents. Lorie has been performing and recording her interpretation of acoustic blues since the early 1990s. In 2012, the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities awarded Lorie an apprenticeship with blues singer Gaye Adegbalola, formerly of the trio Saffire The Uppity Blues Women. Kevin is a harmonic-player. A blues aficionado, he has travelled all over the country playing on local and national stages. He currently sings and plays harmonica with the band, Fatty Lumpkin and the Love Hogs. Recently, Kevin has had the honor of playing harmonica with both of Muddy Water’s sons: Mud Morganfield and Big Bill Morganfield.
Adding to the fun will be a new series by Richard Adams, The Basic City News, and a poem of the month by the Shenandoah Valley’s number one poetry interpreter, Stewart Hall.
Providing the glue to the evening as they have done since October 2007 will be Richard Adams with the Radio Hour’s studio band, The Boogie Kings. Keyboard wizard William Hayes, percussionist with style, J. T Fauber, and Richard Adams on everything else make up The Boogie Kings.
Tickets for the April 15 7:30 p.m. performance are $15 each. All seats are reserved.
