A new Public Policy Polling poll of North Carolina voters gives Democrat Barack Obama the narrowest of leads over Mitt Romney in the presidential race in the Tar Heel State.
Obama leads Romney 49 percent to 48 percent in North Carolina, according to PPP. The result is basically unchanged from the 48 percent-to-48 percent tie that the polling organization registered last week before the Democratic National Convention, which was held in Charlotte.
Democrats wanted to hold their convention in North Carolina to try to tip the scales in what has become a surprising presidential battleground in the wake of Obama’s upset win there in 2008.
PPP has measured the race as a basic tossup since its earliest polling on the 2012 election cycle back in November 2010. The long-anticipated Obama-Romney matchup has been within three percentage points in 24 of the 25 PPP polls taken since that time.
