Dave Matthews Band will help fill the UVA basketball exam break schedule void at John Paul Jones Arena this weekend, with two shows – on Friday and Saturday.

DMB, famously, got its start in Charlottesville in the early 1990s, and though you’ve seen them by now at least a thousand times, you still go.

That’s us, anyway, and this is, for us, coming off what had to be the worst Dave show that we could imagine, back in the summer at Jiffy Lube Live, after which I vowed I was done.

To be fair, the show got out to a late start, close to 10 p.m., after a torrential downpour at the scheduled 8 p.m. start.

But then, damn, the set list was about as depressing as you can imagine for people who’d just gotten downpoured on for two hours.

That one was the first concert I’d ever left early. We were getting into the car as we heard the encore, and didn’t feel like we’d missed anything.

Ringing endorsement here, eh? But, yeah, we’re still going, in part because the tickets are going for practically nothing on StubHub – at this writing, on Tuesday morning, nosebleeds are going for $28 each on Friday and Saturday.

Kathleen Madigan

I listen to a lot of XM standup comedy, probably too much, on long drives. And among my favorites is Kathleen Madigan, who will be at Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville on Friday, Feb. 15.

The Jefferson is a cool place to see a comedy show. Located in the heart of the Downtown Mall, it gives off the feel of a Broadway theater, with floor seating and four levels above.

We sat on the fourth level for the Hannibal Buress show last month, and had a blast.

This one oughta be fun.

On our radar

  • Book of Mormon returns to Altria Theater in Richmond March 26-31. Warning: this one is sacrilegious as hell, but if you’re OK with that, into that, into South Park, OK, it’ll still shock the hell out of you, but it’s good stuff.
  • Hootie & The Blowfish is coming to the Virginia Beach Ampitheater on May 30 and Jiffy Lube Live on July 27. We saw Darius Rucker at Jiffy Lube this past summer, and he’s a great live act. Already have our tickets for Hootie in Virginia Beach.
