Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park presents Looking Beyond the Big House: The Belle Grove Plantation Complex at 7 p.m. Belle Grove Plantation was a prominent landscape feature of the northern Shenandoah Valley. Numerous mills dotted the fertile flood plains of Cedar Creek. Slaves worked the massive fields harvesting wheat and other crops. Join Ranger Kyle Rothemich as he takes visitors “behind the big house” and explores the complexities of the Belle Grove Plantation environment. Meet Ranger Kyle at Belle Grove Plantation Manor House (336 Belle Grove Road, Middletown, VA).  Moderate hiking will be required.

The Virginia Quilt Museum is sponsoring a two-day seminar – “CIVIL WAR QUILTS: WHAT THE WOMEN LEFT BEHIND” to be heldJuly 24-25. Attendees will study Shenandoah Valley textiles made before, during, and after the Civil War. The two-day event will be held in collaboration with the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society’s Heritage Museum in Dayton www.valleyheritagemuseum.org. Lectures, a quilt turning, museum tours and special exhibits will be featured. Full 2-day Seminar fee is $75 for Quilt Museum members, and $85 for non-members. As a special feature, historic textile expert and author Lynne Z. Bassett of Massachusetts will speak on “Herstory in Civil War Quilts.” on Sat. July 25. Tickets for the lecture program ONLY are $25 for museum members, $30 for non-members.
