McDonnell repays loan to benefactor

AFP

bob-mcdonnell-linksGov. Bob McDonnell said Tuesday that loans made to his wife and his family business by Star Scientific CEO Jonnie Williams have been repaid.

Williams had loaned Maureen McDonnell $52,278.17 in 2011 and loaned the McDonnell family business $71,837 in 2012. The payments, made from monies coming from the governor, the family business and family members, according to a press release from the governor, include both principal and interest.

“Being governor of Virginia is the highest honor of my 37 yeara in public service. I am deeply sorry for the embarrassment certain members of my family and I brought upon my beloved Virginia and her citizens,” McDonnell said in a statement.

McDonnell said in the release that he had “broke(n) no laws” and that he is “committed to regaining your sacred trust and confidence.”

“I hope today’s action is another step toward that end,” McDonnell said.
