Elizabeth Cottrell elected chairman of First National Corporation, First Bank

first national bankFirst National Corporation announced that Elizabeth H. Cottrell has been elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Company, as well as of First Bank, its banking subsidiary.

Gerald F. “J.J.” Smith, Jr. has been elected Vice-Chairman and Secretary of each board. Ms. Cottrell has served on the board since 1992, and during her tenure served terms as Chair of the Compensation and Governance Committee and the Trust Committee of the boards of the Company and the Bank, respectively. Most recently she served in the role of Vice-Chairman and Secretary of both boards.

Cottrell is the owner of RiverwoodWriter, LLC, which offers technical writing and editing, ghostwriting, social media and WordPress consulting services to small business clients. As a writer and blogger, she has been a contributor to numerous publications and books over the years.

A native Virginian with deep roots in the Shenandoah Valley since 1976, Cottrell has served a broad array of organizations including service on the boards of the Shenandoah Community Foundation, the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Moore Educational Trust. She also served for nine years on the Shenandoah County School Board. In 2009 she was the recipient of the Woodstock Rotary Club’s Joseph Clower Community Service Award recognizing local citizens who have lived lives of service to their communities.

Smith has served on the board since 2007. He is the Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Valley Proteins, Inc., a rendering business headquartered in Winchester, Virginia. Smith has been active in a wide range of civic and charitable organizations in the northern Shenandoah Valley.
