Crystal Graham: Putting one theory to rest

Crystal Graham

crystal grahamRivalries sure are fun, aren’t they?

It’s fun to tease my University of Virginia buddies about sports – especially in years when Virginia Tech dominates.

Me being a proud Virginia Tech grad and all.

This year was a good example.

Tech has done a good job of beating Virginia down whenever it counts.

Despite UVa.’s absymal season in basketball this year, Chris has still rooted on Virginia to win in the matchups with Tech.

And Virginia did somehow manage to win the last time the teams matched up.

Which is all well and good.

In the Graham household, this time of year is always fun.

Of course, for years, Chris has been trying to convert me to his brand of Wahoo-ism.

Buying me Virginia shorts and a Cav man stuffed doll for starters.

But it’s just not that easy.

Don’t get me wrong … I’m not a diehard Tech fan or anything.

But it sure is fun to root against the other half – especially because he is such a rabid fan.

I’m the first to admit I’ve been to more UVa. games in the past few years than Tech games.

I don’t imagine anyone reading this thinks it’s that unusual to tag along with the hubby to a couple key games each year. I usually get some good fries or nachos out of the deal.

Then again, I only live 30 minutes from Charlottesville.

If it were the other way around, I’m sure he’d be justifying himself to his UVa. friends.

To tell you the truth, I can even root for Virginia when they are not playing Virginia Tech.

I don’t hate them.

Not the way that good husband of mine hates the Hokies and absolutely despises Duke.

And Chris is right when he trys to rail me for knowing more names of UVa. players than Tech ones.

It’s a given that anyone would get to know the players they watch the most.

Doesn’t mean when the two teams match up that I don’t want Tech to win.

I do.

Big time.

I like to make him suffer more than anything.

It’s fun.

Makes the marriage even that more interesting.

Anyway, his failed attempts to try to convert me have been funny at times.

But nothing has been more entertaining than his attempts this week to use a workshop I’m taking against me.

I signed up for a course this week that is taught by an offshoot of UVa. – the University of Virginia School of Continuing and Professional Studies.

The class isn’t even in Charlottesville, ya’ll.

It’s in Richmond.

But’s he’s convinced that this one piece of evidence is enough to pull me to the other side.

Or force me – thinking that Tech would denounce my degree upon hearing this news.

I find it hilarious.

How would four years at Tech be wiped out by one little course?

He was convinced that the one class would tip the favor his way – and that now our kids would go to UVa. no matter what.

Unfortunately for him, it just wasn’t to be.

When I arrived at my first class today, I read something on the door at the Richmond office that put me at ease.

I called my dear husband to share the good news.

On the door of suite 300: The Virginia Tech logo.

Oh, how it makes me proud.

Turns out the very place that I went to take the course is the home for Virginia and Virginia Tech professional workshops.

Kind of kills that little theory of his, doesn’t it?

Poor guy.

The only thing that would put icing on the cake would be a bid for Virginia and Virginia Tech to the NIT – and a matchup between the two teams – with Virginia on the losing end.

I’m not sure he could take it.

But wouldn’t it be fun?
