Choosing the best distribution box for data centers

AFP

As your data center is growing, so does the number of cables carrying the data. Nowadays, fiber optics is the primary method of signal transfer, and it is natural given the sheer number of benefits. A competent IT specialist must be aware of all the factors determining the efficiency of such systems.

This article will give you a brief overview of the main considerations. First, we will look at the purpose and features of a fiber optic distribution box. With the wide array of boxes on the market, it may be difficult to easily spot the best option. So, how should you tackle the issue of satisfying your cabling needs?

The Purpose

Why are these devices necessary for a data center? As the name suggests, they help its operators to manage multiple cables and connection points using a simple box structure. This saves a lot of space, as well as preventing any physical damage. In addition, this simplifies maintenance procedures and brings down your overall costs.

In most cases, this is a 1U rack-mount box, although larger-volume options, such as 4U, are increasingly popular. Importantly, the box may be tailored according to the needs of the users.

Typical Design

The above-mentioned rack-mounted model comes in two types: the flip-type or the pull-type. the latter is normally more expensive, but it enables easier access to the fibers. The front panel design is essential, as it defines how many interfaces may be provided. This element may be either fixed or a non-stationary one. The second option will allow you to connect several adapter panels.

Typical Configurations

There are three main options to choose from, with their own specific uses and benefits:

  1. A box with a fixed front panel

You may first install a 19-inch adapter panel on your standard rack-mount box, and connect various adapters to it. For instance, you may choose a 24-port duplex LC adapter panel. You may also purchase an adapter-free panel, and then install different adapters on it based on the requirements.

  1. A box with a non-stationary front panel

Here, the front panel has to be mounted with several adapter panels, which are all removable. This arrangement will give you higher wiring density, along with enhanced flexibility of management. The typical combination is a 1U box equipped with three removable panels.

  1. A box accommodating an MTP / MPO module box

This type of cabling is becoming the norm, given the spread of the 40G / 100G format. As a consequence, the 1U box has undergone modifications for compatibility with three MTP / MPO module boxes. The system has a number of LC interfaces on the front and several MTP / MPO ones on the rear.

These are the most common types of distribution box arrangements installed today. Today, it is an indispensable part of any efficient data center. Proper and reliable cabling is vital, so choose your model wisely.
