Augusta Health breaks ground on new heart and vascular center

Chris Graham

Augusta Health broke ground today for its new Heart and Vascular Center, a four-story, 67,500 square foot addition.  The construction project will also include renovations to 19,000 square feet in the existing hospital.  The project budget of $30.6 million will be funded through reserves; no money will be borrowed to finance the project.

“This is truly an exciting time for Augusta Health,” says Mary N. Mannix, FACHE, president and CEO of Augusta Health.  “Twenty years after community leaders broke ground for the hospital, we’re breaking ground for an addition to that original building that will focus on a specific need in our community—cardiac and vascular care.  Our cardiac program continues to grow to meet these needs.  Time is essential to saving heart muscle and saving lives.  We’ve worked hard to drop our average ‘door to balloon’ time from 135 minutes to 43 minutes, more than half of what it was just a few years ago. We’ve also done this with a high level of quality, receiving recognition from The Joint Commission as a top performer in the areas of heart attack care and heart failure care.  The Heart and Vascular Center is an important next step in bringing the highest quality cardiac care to Augusta County.”

Plans for Augusta Health’s Heart and Vascular Center include two state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization labs; a third vascular ultrasound procedure room for testing of the lower extremities; non-invasive cardiac services such as nuclear medicine, stress testing and echocardiograms; Cardiac Rehabilitation, support services for cardiology such as Diabetes Education and Nutrition Counseling, and physician offices for Cardiology and Pulmonology/Critical Care.

The architects for the project are Kahler Slater, and the construction management firm selected is Whiting Turner.  Both are firms with national healthcare experience and expertise.  Approximately 65 percent of the subcontractors on the project will be local Valley firms.
