Custin Jazz Series commences

The Custin Jazz Series will begin on Saturday, Sept. 15 with a performance by ACME Swing Mfg. Co.

According to Clair Myers, WTA’s executive director, “Jean Custin has a history of supporting jazz artists and festivals. Her support of WTA’s monthly series allows WTA to bring a level of talent that the Gateway would not be able to engage while keeping tickets affordable.”

In coming months, the Custin Jazz Series will include performances by Too Human, Stephanie Nakasian and Hod O’Brien, L’Tanya Mari Trio and the Great American Songbook among others.

The September engagement with ACME Swing Mfg. Co. is the second by the group at WTA’s Gateway.  Their first performance in September of 2011 was called “the best yet” by a loyal follower of Gateway performances. The group has been described as  ‘an ecstatically fun band” They are noted for  performing hot swing and jazz music that makes the audiences want to dance. ACME is not “sit-on-your-can-and-listen-music.” The group has a wide repertoire of pre-war tunes to make an audience swing to a hot jazz standard, swoon over an old-time ballad, or get on down with the occasional gritty blues.  Their infectious beat and enthusiasm makes any crowd want to move!

“WTA’s Gateway is the ideal space to enjoy ACME,” said Myers.  He reported that performers have called the venue the “best listening room in Central Virginia.”

The intimate jazz club environment, excellent acoustics, and welcoming atmosphere combine to make a performance at WTA’s Gateway an evening to remember.

Tickets for the inaugural performance of the Custin Jazz Series are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.  Advanced tickets may be purchased online at or by calling the box office at 540-943-9999.
