Bridgewater College supports town’s speed limit reduction
The town will lower the speed limit on Dinkel Avenue between Third Street and College View Drive from 35 mph to 29 mph, a change motivated in part by a group of Bridgewater College students who asked officials to make safety improvements. Bridgewater College Chief of Police Nicholas Picerno spoke at the council meeting, relaying the College’s views and fully endorsing the town’s initiative to make the speed change.
“The Town of Bridgewater and the College have enjoyed a long, healthy partnership,” said Bridgewater College President David Bushman. “The College fully supports and is grateful for the town’s decision to lower the speed limit. This is just the next step in us working together to better the quality of life for those who live here and those who study at the College.”
Dinkel Avenue is the main road through the College, and it is crossed by hundreds of students, faculty and staff daily as their make their way about campus. The safety of the stretch of road has long been top of mind for Picerno. “The safety of our students and others in the community is of utmost importance to us. By reducing the speed limit through campus, we hope to reduce the risk to pedestrians and drivers.”
Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to more than 1,800 undergraduate students.
