With the April 15 tax filing deadline approaching,Congressman Bob Goodlatte (VA-6th District) urged eligible Virginians to use the IRS and Virginia Free File programs to save money at tax time.
Free File is a public-private partnership between the Internal Revenue Service and tax preparation software companies that not only provides free tax preparation assistance to eligible filers, but also comes at no cost to the government.
Virginia is one of 20 states plus the District of Columbia that sponsor a State Free File program, allowing eligible residents to easily and accurately complete both their federal and state taxes with the trusted name-brand tax preparation software products of their choice.
The briefing also highlighted free tax services provided by the Lynchburg Community Action Group (Lyn-CAG) through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
“The Free File and VITA programs help low and middle income Virginia residents access all available credits and deductions to receive the maximum amount of their hard-earned tax refund,” said Rep. Goodlatte. “Free File saves money by encouraging people to file electronically and is a good example of the government and private sector working hand-in-hand to provide a valuable service to the community.”
“These software products make the annual filing process quick and easy. Our hope is that every eligible person takes advantage of Free File and gets every credit and deduction they deserve this tax season,” said Jim Ruda of the Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA), the organization sponsoring the event.
