The Eastern Kentucky Colonels scored twice in the first 3:24 of game action and held on for a 2-0 win over the VMI Keydets in non-conference women’s soccer action Saturday at VMI’s Patchin Field.
EKU struck early, scoring on only the second shot of the match. A loose ball in the box was deflected by a VMI player and came loose to Erin Torrence, who converted the shot past Emily Marbury for her second goal of the young season. Just over a minute later, a Logan Harvey cross bounced over the head of an EKU player and found Cassie Smith, who beat Marbury to cap the scoring.
With the win, EKU evened its record at 2-2 and won its second straight match, while VMI dropped to 2-1 and failed to post the first 3-0 start in program history.
The Colonels nearly added on in the 34th minute, when a header by Torrence was cleared away by VMI’s Taylor Callahan for a team save. VMI then had an offensive flurry early in the second half that was capped by an Emma Quirk shot off the left post. Despite those efforts, neither team could find the net again as EKU held on for the 2-0 victory.
EKU outshot VMI 16-11, while both teams recorded six corner kicks in the match. VMI had all six of its in the second half, while EKU had all six of its corners in the first 45 minutes.
For the second straight match, VMI shared time in goal with Marbury and Ceci Keppeler each playing 45 minutes. Keppeler was credited with three of VMI’s four saves, with the fourth being a team save, while EKU keeper Anna Hall made three saves for the visitors.
VMI women’s soccer will return to action Friday, when the Keydets travel to Jersey City, N.J. to take on Saint Peter’s. Opening kick is set for 3 p.m.
