Waynesboro Public Library programs have returned in full strength after renovations, finished just in time for summer reading.
“Dream Big, Read” is the theme for the children’s summer reading program. It is open to children and young adults of all ages and reading abilities. By reading they earn weekly prizes and library dollars to spend on books in the summer reading program store. Children earn one dollar per picture book or one dollar for every ten pages of a chapter book once the book is checked in. The program store will be open June 18 through July 27.
Young adults ages thirteen and up can also join a reading discussion group called Lip Service to Literature (L2l). The book selection is the New York Times bestseller Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. Copies of the book will be provided by the library for $3.00 while supplies last. Participants receive a goodie bag for each L2L discussion attended. These occur on June 26 and July 10 at 6:30 p.m.
The Scholastic Book Fair will also be at the library June 25-June 29 and open from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. All purchases support the youth services department. Finally, the children’s reading program ends with Fun Fest on Friday, July 27 at 6:00 p.m. This street fair type of event includes music, a petting zoo, face painting, an inflatable jumping castle, and games.
This year it’s not just the kids that get to have all of the fun. Book-A-Trip is once again here. The book selection is Unruly Americans & the Origins of the Constitution by Woody Holton. Holton, a professor at the University of Richmond, will be at the library on Friday, July 13 at 12:00 p.m. to discuss his book. Book sales and signing will occur at the program. Book-A-Trip ends with a bus trip to James Madison’s home, Montpellier, on Saturday, September 22. The book may be purchased for $10 or will be included in the price of the $36 bus trip for those going.
But that’s not all for adults! A new addition this year is the adult summer reading program. Adults can receive prizes, too, for checking out and reading books between July 9 and August 6. Each checkout slip goes into a weekly drawing for a prize. These weekly prizes will be displayed in the library. A grand prize drawing for a portable DVD player will be held at the end of the program.
