Washington tops Phils, 4-1, to take weekend series

nationals_logoGio Gonzalez put in another strong outing, Bryce Harper knocked in two more runs, and Washington closed out a series win over Philadelphia with a 4-1 win on Sunday in Nationals Park.

Gonzalez (4-2) gave up a run on seven hits in six and a third innings, striking out seven and walking one. Four Nats relievers closed it out from there, with Drew Storen notching his 14th save with a scoreless ninth in which he gave up a hit and struck out two.

Aaron Harang (4-4) took the loss, giving up two runs on seven hits in six innings of work, striking out two and walking two.

Philadelphia got on the board first, on a fourth-inning RBI single by Jeff Francoeur. A Jose Lobaton RBI single in the bottom half of the inning, and an RBI grounder by Harper in the fifth that scored Yunel Escobar from third base gave Washington a 2-1 lead.

Harper knocked in Denard Span with a fly-ball single to left in the seventh to add an insurance run, and a Ryan Zimmerman RBI double that scored Harper from first made it 4-1.

The win gives the streaking Nationals (26-18) a two and a half game lead in the National League East.
