Washington Nationals win in 14

A rain delay and a 14-inning game sent Washington Nationals fans home without the promised postgame fireworks show.

They had to settle for the baseball brand of fireworks from Ben Revere.

The leadoff man doubled home Danny Espinosa in the bottom of the 14th to lift the Nats to a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds Friday night.

The start of the game was delayed 35 minutes by rain, and there were intermittent light rain showers throughout the game.

Revere (.225/.276/.283, 1 HR, 14 RBI), at least, wasn’t dampened, going 3-for-7 at the plate on the long night, scoring a run in addition to driving in the game-winning run.

Bryce Harper (.258/.402/.488, 16 HR, 46 RBI) and Daniel Murphy (.352/.393/.591, 14 HR, 55 RBI) each had two hits.

Tanner Roark (7-5, 2.93 ERA, 1.23 WHIP) got a no-decision in a fine effort, going seven innings, giving up two runs on eight hits, striking out four and walking two.

The Nats bullpen put in six scoreless innings, giving up two hits, striking out six and walking none.

Yusmeiro Petit (3-1, 2.70 ERA) got the win with two innings of scoreless relief.

Washington (49-32) has won six in a row, and has a six and a half game lead on the New York Mets (41-37) in the National League East.
