uva-logo-new2Virginia men’s tennis senior Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) will be facing Jeremy Chardy in the first round of the US Open men’s singles main draw.

“Playing in the US Open is really surreal,” Shane said. “It is something I have dreamed about since I was young. For an American, playing in the US Open is the biggest thing, one of the biggest sporting events in the world. I am excited. It has been a lot of hard work coming back from injuries, but I am as ready as I can be now to play.”

Shane earned a wild card entry into the US Open by capturing the 2015 NCAA Singles Championship last may in Waco, Texas. Shane, a 2015 ITA All-American in both singles and doubles, ended last season at No. 2 in the collegiate ranks in singles and No. 5 in doubles. Shane partnered with his brother, UVa alum Justin Shane (’14), to win the doubles title at the CarX Futures of Champaign tournament earlier this month in Illinois.

Chardy, the current No. 27 player in the world, advanced to his first-ever Masters 1000s semifinal earlier this month, falling to Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4 in the semis of the Roger Cup in Montreal, Canada.

Shane and Chardy’s match will either be played on Monday, Aug. 31 or Tuesday, Sept. 1 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y. with the specific date and time of all first-round matches to be announced later.
