Over the past three games, third-ranked UVA has averaged 15.7 turnovers per game, significantly above its 9.4-per-game season average.
Turnovers are an obvious area of concern for coach Tony Bennett as the Cavs continue their march for ACC and NCAA titles.
“We’ve just got to keep trying to be as sound as we can while still running our offense,” said Bennett after Virginia defeated Florida State, 58-44, in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday.
The ‘Hoos committed 14 turnovers, leading to 12 FSU points. Virginia opponents have scored an average of 8.9 points per game off turnovers. With UVA giving up 50.1 points per game, that’s 17.8 percent of the offensive output.
In their last three games, Cavs’ opponents have gotten 30.7 percent of their points off turnovers.
That’s the bad news. The good news is that overall, Virginia has still given up an average of 50 points per game in the last three.
Which would seem to suggest that there would be an improvement on that number if the offense can cut down on the sloppiness.
“Yeah, we talk about that when our turnovers lead to easy breakouts especially. If we miss a shot, we’re usually better on the rebound in transition D. But those hurt when you go in there and all of a sudden they’re getting breakouts,” Bennett said.
