Water is aptly termed as the elixir of life. It is used for a slew of purposes like drinking, irrigating crops, washing utensils, raw material in industries – and the list rolls on. But over the years, due to industrial progress, pollution, contamination, and wrong ways of purification, water has become the most polluted substance. Hence, its purification has assumed utmost importance in recent days. So many companies started producing filters which cater to the needs of many users.

However, not a single water filter can fulfill all the pre-requisites of customers. The research and development sections within companies come up with new ideas for the convenience of customers. Berkey is such a company that has so many varieties to meet the requirements of customers. Here is a guide for selecting a Berkey water filter.

Berkey water filters have a wide range of varieties from light travel, big, crown, imperial, royal, and bottle from a capacity of 1.5 gallons to 6 gallons. There are two chambers, upper and lower. Filtered water is filled up in the lower chamber by gravity. There are two candles or filters fitted in the upper chamber, and they are responsible for filtering all contamination, including fluoride. You will have to choose from these wide range which fits in your house and your needs.

  • The requirement of water: It depends upon how and for what purpose you use filtered water. Some need only for drinking while others use it for cooking as well. So you can go for either a bigger or smaller one based on your requirements. But if you want a portable one, go for a travel filter. It is also important where you are placing it; there should be enough space for mounting.
  • Family size: It is estimated that a person consumes at least 8-ounce water per day. If there are two to four persons in your family, get a big filter. It is roomier and holds at least 3-4 gallons at a time.
  • Reverse osmosis system: Go through the links and table of contaminations removed by each filter. Be sure of filter removing fluoride as it has so many harmful effects on our health.
  • Speed of filtration: If you have already purchased a big one, then you will not have to hold the glass under the tap for long. There is another solution to this. Berkey filter comes with two filter rods with the adjustment of two additional filters. The upper chamber has two more holes to fix these filters, thereby doubling effective speed.
  • Make of container: There is a choice of steel containers or plastic containers as well. Steel containers are easy to wash, while plastic ones might accumulate precipitation.
  • Type of filters: Our main aim should be water purification from all contamination as well as chemicals like fluoride and arsenic. PF-2 and PF-4 are best for it. Now ceramic filters are also available for lower chambers to filter from fluoride and arsenic.
  • Food color removal: One more thing is that we want pure fresh and transparent water to drink. Some food colors are not removed from water in the filter. See that your filter contains this facility.
  • Easy assembly procedure: Berkey comes with an easy assembly system so that there is no need for a mechanic to fit it. The filter element and tap are fitted with a washer and plastic screws. You will require a mechanic if you want to mount it on a wall.
  • The durability of filters: Usually, these filters have a capacity to filter up to 6000 gallons in life. There are filters that need not be replaced after that. You can go for auto sterilization filter or reparable filters. However, Berkey filters do not cost more. Only $ 120/- for the set of two.
