Staunton District Traffic Alert: May 2-6

road-work-headerThe following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton District during the coming weeks.

The Staunton District is comprised of 11 counties: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies.

Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 64

(NEW) Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Lane closures for pothole patching Monday through Wednesday, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. each day.

Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Watch for crews removing debris at various locations. Cleaning around box culverts, drain pipes and ditches between mile markers 16 and 26. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Exit 1 off-ramp and mile marker 2 to 4, eastbound – Alternating lane closures for paving operations throughMay 14, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 10 to 7 including Exit 7 off-ramp, westbound – Alternating lane closures for paving operations. May 1 to May 21, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 159 (Dunlap Creek Road) –Traffic lanes restricted to 8 feet 6 inches on temporary bridge during roadway alignment project for box culvert replacement over Crow Run.  Project will also use temporary traffic signals. Work zone is 0.45 mile west of Route 717 to 0.55 mile west of Route 17.  Commercial vehicles can use Route 18 as an alternate route. Estimated September.

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 632 (Crizer’s Gap Road) – Closed from 8 a.m. on May 2 to 4 p.m. on May 19 for a bridge replacement.  The bridge is located 0.2 mile from the dead end and 0.35 miles from Route 42 (Cowpasture River Road).

Various roads – Patching and ditching.  Monday – Friday, 7:30 to 3 p.m.   

 

 

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY                                                                                                                   

INTERSTATE 64

(NEW) Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Lane closures for pothole patching Monday through Wednesday, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. each day.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for crews removing debris. Cleaning paved ditches and drop inlets between mile marker 51 and 53. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 53 to 55, eastbound and westbound – Single lane of traffic through Maury River bridges work zone.  Be alert for westbound travel lane shifts.  Speed limit is 55 miles per hour. Estimated project completion December.

Exit 56, eastboundDaily left lane closure to I-81 (mile marker 195) northbound for bridge work. Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.  Estimated completion May.

 

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 173 to 205, northbound and southbound – Be alert for crews removing debris and cleaning paved ditches at various locations, Monday to Friday. Cleaning box culverts and drain pipes between mile markers 177 to 179, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Mile markers 174 to 206, northbound and southbound – Nighttime lane closures for pothole patching Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. the following mornings.

(NEW) Exit 205 (Raphine/Steeles Tavern), northbound – Nighttime off-ramp closure for milling and paving from 10 p.m. Sunday, May 8 until 8 a.m. Monday, May 9. Message boards will direct motorists to alternate exits.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 60 (Fredericksburg Road) Shoulder closures for utility installation beginning at the old Highland Belle School. The work will involve areas under the ramps on the east side of Route 60 and under I-64, and along east side of Route 623 (Fredericksburg Road) to 0.22 miles north of the I-64 ramp.

(NEW) Ridge Avenue (Buena Vista) Flagger controlled traffic for sidewalk, drainage and curb work from 29th Street (Route 60) to Maple Avenue. Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Various roads – Watch for daytime line-painting and sign installation, various days, locations and times.

Various roads – Ditching, brush cutting, pavement work, pipe replacement, shoulder maintenance and pothole repairs. Monday – Friday, 7:30 to 3 p.m.   

 

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 705 (Mountain View Road) – Road closed May 3-18 for bridge replacement over Marl Creek Stream. Work zone is 0.98 miles to Route 706 (Borden Grant Road) and 0.62 miles to Route 703 (Forest Grove Road). Traffic will be detoured to Route 703 and to Route 706.

Route 708 (Gilmore’s Mill Road) – Road closed for bridge replacement at Cedar Creek just east of Route 608 (Shafer Lane).  Detour using Route 608 and Route 130 (Wert Faulkner Highway).  Estimated completion Fall 2016.

INTERSTATE 64

(NEW) Mile markers 87 to 100, eastbound and westbound – Nighttime lane closures for pothole patching Monday through Wednesday, 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. the following mornings.

Mile marker 87 to 100, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for crews removing debris, cleaning bridge slopes, paved ditches and inlets . Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Mile markers 88 and 97– Shoulder closures for sign installation. May 2 to 6.

Mile marker 94 to 107, eastbound and westbound – Shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system. Monday through Sunday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion June 4.

 

INTERSTATE 81

(NEW) Mile markers 205 to 237, northbound and southbound – Nighttime lane closures for pothole patching Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. the following mornings.

Mile marker 205 to 237, northbound and southbound – Be alert for crews removing debris, cleaning paved ditches, drop inlets, box culverts and drain pipes at various locations.   Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Mile markers 215 to 205, southbound – Nighttime lane closures for replacement of pavement markings. Thursday, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday morning.

(NEW) Mile markers 220 and 224 – Shoulder closures for sign installation. May 2 to 6.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(UPDATE) Route 250 – Nighttime lane closures at Route 792 intersection for overhead signal work. May 2 to May 6.

(UPDATE) Route 250 /I-81 Off-Ramp – Daytime signal work along the shoulder on May 2.

Route 250 (Churchville Avenue) – Flagger controlled lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily for soil testing at bridge over Bell Creek, including the Route732 ( Franks Mill Road) intersection and the Jakes’ Convenience Store area. Estimated completion May 6.

Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) – Eastbound lane closure/lane shifts from Staunton city limits to Route 1427 (Rowe Road) for utility work.  Estimated completion May 31.

Route 250 (Three Notched Mountain Highway) – Shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system. Monday through Sunday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion June 4.

Route 340 (Rosser Avenue, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system. Monday through Sunday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion June 4.

Route 340 (Main Street, Waynesboro) – Road closed  between Constitution Park and East Avenue for replacement of South River bridge. Through traffic will use Broad Street (Route 250) as detour route. Local traffic has access to all businesses and residences throughout the project. Estimated completion December 2017.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue) – Shoulder closures for installation of traffic-management system. Monday through Sunday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion June 4.

(NEW) Route 685 (Lehigh Road, Craigsville area) – Road closing May 9 for bridge replacement over Little Calfpasture River. Work zone is 0.45 mile northeast of Route 684 to 0.52 mile south of Route 42. Detour in place. Estimated completion December.

(NEW) Route 732 (Roman Road, near Mount Sidney) – Road closed May 9 to May 13 for bridge replacement between Route 753 (Slate Hill Road) and Route 616 (Liberty School Road). Follow posted detour.

Route 732 (Franks Mill Road) – Flagger controlled lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily for soil test borings at bridge over Bell Creek, including work at the Jakes’ Convenience Store area and the Route 250 intersection. Estimated completion May 6.

INTERSTATE 81

(UPDATE) Mile marker 237 to 264, northbound and southbound – Watch for crews removing debris, repairing slopes and cleaning paved ditches. Pothole repairs as needed.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

(NEW) Mile markers 242 and 248 – Shoulder closures for sign installation. Week of May 2 to 6.

Mile marker 243 to 239, southbound – Right shoulder closures for utility work. Monday to Friday.

Mile marker 245 to 237, southbound – Fiber optic installation through early May. Be alert for shoulder closures. Future phases continuing south through September 30.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 11 (Lee Highway, Mount Crawford area) – Flagger controlled intermittent lane closures as needed for slope repairs just south of Route 727 (Airport Road).  May 2 through May 6, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Replacement of North River bridge.  Watch for traffic shifts, right shoulder closures and flagger controlled intermittent lanes closures, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Work zone from Route 694 to one mile south of Mount Crawford.  Variable message boards and pavement markings direct motorists. Estimated completion July 2017.

Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Periodic flagging for tree removal and pipe installation as part of intersection improvements at Route 340 (East Side Highway).  Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Estimated project completion October.

Route 340 (East Side Highway) – Periodic flagging for tree removal and pipe installation as part of intersection improvements at Route 253/659  (Port Republic Road). Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Estimated project completion October.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 628 (Beldor Road) – Stop-and-proceed work zone with a lane restriction of 10 feet during bridge deck replacement. Work zone is 2.33 miles south of Route 33. Estimated completion May 13.

Route 659 (Port Republic Road) – Periodic flagging for tree removal and pipe installation as part of intersection improvements at Route 340.  Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Estimated project completion October.

(UPDATE) Route 704 (Cecil Wampler Road) – Flagger controlled, intermittent shoulder and lane closures for installation of water lines. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Work zone between I-81 and Route 679 (Pleasant Valley Road).  Estimated completion May 30.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming.  Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 211, westbound –Single lane closure 24/7 for bridge deck repairs over Shenandoah River between Route 646 and Route 615. Estimated completion June 3.

(UPDATE) Route 340 – Flagger controlled lane closure for paving operations from Route 614 (Shuler Lane) to west of Route 622 (Pond Avenue).  7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion May 13.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

(NEW) Route 618 – Flagger controlled lane closure  7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for paving operations, shoulder stone and pavement marking operations from the cul de sac to 1.5 miles south of Route 638 (Honeyville Road).  Estimated completion May 6.

INTERSTATE 81

(NEW) Mile marker 264 to 300, northbound and southbound – Nighttime mobile lane closures Monday through Thursday, 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. each day for crack sealing operations.

Mile marker 264 to 300, northbound and southbound – Watch for crews removing debris, repairing fences.  Pothole repairs as needed.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Route 725 (Morning Star Road, Mount Jackson area) –  Road closed from 0.46 miles south of Route 262 (Orkney Grade) to 2.67 miles north of Route 726 (Hepner Road) for bridge replacement.  Follow posted detours.  Estimated completion May 13.

Queen Street (Route 1201, Town of Strasburg) – Road closed to through traffic between South Massanutten Street and Holiday Street for a bridge replacement over Town Run. Detour in place. Estimated completion November.

FREDERICK COUNTY

INTERSTATE 66

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 299, northbound – Nighttime single lane closure Sunday night through Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., for bridge deck repairs over Cedar Creek.  Estimated completion June 3.

(NEW) Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Mobile lane closures Monday through Thursday, 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. each day for crack sealing operations.

(UPDATE) Mile marker 300 to 324, northbound and southbound – Watch for crews removing debris and cleaning paved ditches.  Pothole repairs as needed.  Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

(NEW) Mile marker 308 to 310, northbound and southbound – Overnight right shoulder closure for Opequon Creek bridge inspection, from 9 p.m. May 2 until 5 a.m. May 3.

Mile marker 309 to 311, northbound and southbound – Right and left shoulders closed 24/7. Speed limit of 60 miles per hour throughout the work zone until completion of the exit 310 construction project. Limited space for traffic to merge onto southbound I-81 due to shortened on-ramp.  Motorists should also be alert for trucks entering and exiting work zone.  Estimated project completion May 2018.

(NEW) Mile marker 314 – Overnight lane and shoulder closures for bridge inspection over Abrams Creek, from 8 p.m. May 6 until 5 a.m. May 7.

Route 642 (Tasker Road, Kernstown Interchange)  – Flagger controlled single lane traffic Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily, in the area of County Sanitation Authority facility for construction of tie-in of new road to existing road.  Northbound 24/7 right shoulder closures from existing intersection with Route 37 to 0.44 miles south of intersection as part of I-81 exit 310 interchange project. Estimated project completion May 2018.

Route 847 (Hillandale Lane, Kernstown Interchange) – Northbound 24/7 right shoulder closures from existing intersection with Route 37 to 0.31 miles north of intersection as part of I-81 exit 310 Interchange Project. Work performed Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated project completion May 2018.

(UPDATE) Route 7, eastbound – Lane and shoulder closures as needed for the installation of communication utilities from Shenandoah River to Loudoun County line.  Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is May 20.

Mile marker 6 to 14, eastbound and westbound – Alternating right and left shoulder closures for bridge painting.  7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion May 20.

(NEW) Mile marker 11 to 12, westbound – Lane and shoulder closures for bridge inspection over Manassas Run.  May 4 and May 5, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

INTERSTATE 81
No lane closures reported.

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 55 (Strasburg Road) – Intersection modification at Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road). Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly. Temporary traffic signal at 55/340/522 intersection, and lane shift from 340/522 to Forest Hill Drive. Changes in effect through summer 2016 for construction of new travel lanes. Estimated project completion December 2017.

Route 340/522 (Shenandoah Avenue/Winchester Road) – South Fork bridge replacement and intersection modification at Route 55 (Strasburg Road).  Lane closures as needed Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly.  Lane shift at 17th street and temporary traffic signal at 340/522/55 intersection, placing all traffic on the newly constructed bridge. 18th street is open to traffic, with left turn restrictions until summer 2017.  Estimated project completion December 2017.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 624 (Morgan Ford Road) – Road closed for bridge replacement over the Shenandoah River. Work zone from Route 643 (Howellsville Road) to Route 661 (Fairground Road).  Detours:  Drivers south of the bridge will turn right on Route 643 (Howellsville Road), which changes to Route 603 and then to Route 638 in Clarke County. Drivers will then turn left on Route 17/50 (John Mosby Highway) and left on Route 624 (Red Gate Road/Milldale Road) to reach the end of the detour. Drivers north of the bridge will follow Route 624 (Milldale Road/Red Gate Road) north and turn right on Route 17/50 (John Mosby Highway) in Clarke County. Drivers will then turn right on Route 638 (Howellsville Road), which changes to Route 603 and then Route 643, to reach the end of the detour.  Estimated project completion June 2018.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming.  Flagger control during daylight hours.  Monday to Friday.

 

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
