Second death in Rockingham County crash

policecar3Virginia State Police were notified this morning that a second driver has died as a result of injuries sustained in a Wednesday crash in Rockingham County.

Sarah M. Hensley, 35,  of Elkton, Va., passed away at UVA Medical Center early Friday morning (Oct. 3). Hensley was involved in a three-vehicle accident reported Wednesday morning on Route 340 outside of Elkton. A 1999 Buick sedan was traveling north on Route 340 when it attempted to pass a tractor-trailer traveling in front of it. As the Buick was in the southbound lanes passing the tractor-trailer, it struck head-on a 2005 Honda Civic. The impact caused the Buick to then strike the tractor-trailer.

The driver of the Buick, Robert D. Hulvey, 82, of Waynesboro, Va., died at the scene.

Hensley was transported to UVA Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. A 3-year-old male passenger was transported to rockingham memorial hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He was safely secured in a child safety seat.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Irvine A. Mays, 62, of Lynchburg, Va., was not injured in the crash.

The incident took place in a legal passing zone. All drivers were wearing seat belts.
