Waynesboro to host 16th annual Public Works Day

public worksDATE: Saturday, May 16th
TIME: 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
LOCATION: 900 Essex Avenue, just across from North Park at 2nd Street

This will mark the sixteenth year that the Waynesboro Department of Public Works has celebrated National Public Works Week with a special Saturday event. Public Works Week is an annual nationwide event signed into law by John F. Kennedy in 1962 to help educate people of the vital role of local public works departments. Our theme will be: “Community Begins Here.”

There would be no community without the quality of life public works provides. There would be no community to police and protect, no public to lead or represent. Public works allows the world as we know it to be. This year’s theme “Community Begins Here” speaks to the essential nature of Public Works services in support of everyday quality of life.

The trademark of our event has been the wide range of informational presentations for adults in conjunction with hands on activities for children. Our goal has been to create an atmosphere of family fun with an educational twist.

This year we will return to our Operations Location after being at the Landfill Park for the past three years. Our staff is excited to bring back some of our core exhibits and add a few new ones such as the Sewer Division’s “What’s Under the City,” the Streets Division’s “Bucket Truck Ride” and “Miniature Driving Range” for the kids, the Engineering Division’s “Imagination Station,” and the Stormwater Division’s “Watershed Model.”

This year we are also bringing back the classic “Cakewalk” to the tunes of the Bluegrass Band “Plank Road.” There will be multiple chances to win some interesting raffle prizes (no cost to enter).
