The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting residents of Greater Augusta County to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place on Saturday, September 10 at Ridgeview Park in Waynesboro.
Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk. It is an experience for 300 participants in Waynesboro who will learn about Alzheimer’s disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities and clinical studies enrollment to support programs and services.
Walk participants also honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony.
“I walk for my grandmother Mildred Allen and my mother Patty A. Pugh, her caregiver” said Leah Pugh, a financial advisor for Edward Jones in Staunton. “My grandmother retired the day I was born and her only focus was to take care of her grandchildren. I walk because my children will never get to experience the amazing woman she was. And I walk for my mother who had to be a parent, an employee and a daughter to a woman who did not always know our names.”
In addition to the the 2-mile Walk, participants will enjoy opening ceremony host Tom Morgan from Hit Kicker 99.7 and a special tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s. Last year, the Greater Augusta Walk to End Alzheimer’s raised $49,510. This year’s goal is $56,500.
Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans to as many as 16 million by 2050.
