Staunton finishes repair at Gypsy Hill Park duck pond

returning fish to the duck pondA leak in Gypsy Hill Park’s duck pond has been patched, and water has been restored to its normal level.

A five-foot hole in the pond was the discovered source of the leak. On Friday, July 8, the City filled the hole with flowable fill, a porous concrete that withstands water, and monitored the water level in the pond throughout the following week to ensure that the patch worked.

Fish that were removed during the repair process are being returned to the pond this week. Visitors can expect to see water that is slightly cloudier than normal until sediment from the pond’s bottom settles, a result of the patching process.

Parks and Recreation staff first noticed a drop in the pond’s water level a couple of days before Fourth of July festivities were scheduled to begin in the park. In an effort to keep the pond full for the holiday weekend, the City pumped water into the pond until festivities concluded, and then shut off the water supply to find the origin of the leak and make repairs.

As many fish as possible were relocated to nearby bodies of water until the process was complete.

Leaks in the duck pond are not uncommon and have occurred over the years. However, this was a larger leak that took more time than usual to repair.
