The conventional wisdom is that the 2010 elections will be the Republicans to lose, but poll numbers from Public Policy Polling released today suggest that the GOP may still have some work to do between now and November.

Only 28 percent of voters in the country say they approve of the current direction of the GOP, with 51 percent disapproving, according to the latest PPP poll. Even self-identified Republicans aren’t all that enthusiastic, with just 54 percent saying they like where the party is headed.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele is a drag on the party in the poll numbers – with 10 percent of the overall electorate expressing a favorable opinion of Steele and 33 percent seeing him unfavorably.

Two other party leaders tested in the poll – Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader John Boehner – fare only a little better. Each had positive ratings of 15 percent in the poll, with 25 percent holding a negative view of Boehner and 26 percent holding a negative view of McConnell.
