A new Public Policy Polling survey of Virginia voters has the state overwhelmingly opposed to changing the name of the NFL’s Washington Redskins.
The poll has 66 percent of Virginians opposing a name change, with 22 percent in support.
Looking at the issue in terms of voter demographics, Democrats are split 41 percent opposed to a name change and 39 percent in favor. The independent split is 74 percent opposed and 19 percent in favor, and Republicans are split 89 percent opposed and 5 percent in favor.
A PPP poll on the issue last fall had the overall split at 71 percent opposed and 21 percent in favor, so there has been a little movement, but just a little.
Washington is the most popular NFL team in the state, with the support of 28 percent of Virginians, to 10 percent for the Dallas Cowboys, 7 percent for the Pittsburgh Steelers, 6 percent for the Green Bay Packers and 5 percent for the Baltimore Ravens.
