Maury River Senior Center’s gardeners, The Mrs C’s Diggers, took the Sweepstakes Prize at the Rockbridge Regional Fair Horticultural Show for the second year in a row. The News-Gazetts’s headline says it all: “Two Guys, A Gal and MRSC Take Top Horticultural Show Awards.”
The Diggers, who are mentored by Master Gardeners Jane Stange, Angelika Matiuk, and Aileen McKenna (also a Local Council Member), have been working on this year’s garden since last winter when they chose seeds from a multitude of catalogs. After carefully nurturing their seedlings, they have been rewarded with a riot of color this summer from zinnias, marigolds, poppies, asters, phlox, coleus, foxgloves, coral bells, spring bulbs, herbs of many kinds, and jonny-jump-ups. Their autumn-blooming clematis is just beginning to set buds.
The Sweepstakes Prize is awarded to the entrant who is awarded the most blue ribbons. The Diggers brought home 5 blue, 2 red, 3 yellow and 1 white ribbon for their entries. The Prize comes with a $50 check, which The Diggers plan to use to share lunch at the local Kenney’s Restaurant.
